I am working under the mentorship of Dr Mistry to investigate and validate biomarkers for acute steatohepatitis, particularly alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH). We have a prospective project underway using serum and plasma samples from human subjects. Our primary aim through our candidate biomarkers is to understand the relationship between the pathologic lipid accumulation and myeloid cell activation that occurs in AH. We are applying a rare disease approach to achieve this aim by leveraging the work that the Mistry Lab and others have done on biomarker discovery in Gaucher Disease and a lysosomal storage disorder in which there is an abnormal accumulation of glycosphingolipids. A major motivation for this study has been our clinical observations of patients with AH, an entity that, in its severe presentation, carries high short-term mortality without liver transplantation and for which other treatment options are in dire need.
